Healthy Ways to Deal with Stress and Anxiety in a Pandemic

As I think about the past week--a week in which I grew increasingly agitated and anxious due to the spread of the Coronavirus and the threat of COVID-19--I realized some difficult things about myself.

I realized that there are four things that I do not handle well:

1. Forced changes in routine/plans. My life is chaotic at times, sure, but to have the basic structure of a week interrupted is extremely off-putting for me.

2. Restricted movement. Being stuck anywhere is difficult for me. Whether it’s a car in the shop or being stuck at home for other reasons, I don’t like the feeling of being trapped...

WHAT IS TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE?

Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was murdered in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to anti-transgender violence since Rita Hester's death and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. TDOR founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith says, “Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost.

Black History Month, Part 4 - Pauli Murray

Pauli Murray lived a truly remarkable life. A poet, writer, activist, labor organizer, legal theorist, and Episcopal priest, Murray was childhood friends with Langston Hughes, joined James Baldwin at the MacDowell Colony the first year it admitted African-Americans, was friends with Eleanor Roosevelt for over two decades, and helped Betty Friedan found the National Organization for Women. Along the way, she formulated and articulated the intellectual and legal foundations of two of the most important social justice movements of the twentieth century: first, a paper she wrote while in college for overturning Plessy (“Separate but Equal”), and, later, when she co-wrote a law-review article that was subsequently used by a rising star at the A.C.L.U.

Graphic Design

Business cards, postcards, and custom keychains I designed.

Logo, sticker, and business card designs

Micro-copy and Custom Photography

I staged and created all of the custom, product placement photos for Evergreen Promotion's site. I also wrote all of the micro-copy and product descriptions.

Forms

Forms that I redesigned to be fillable PDF files that were also easier to use when printed.

Martin Marine spent tens of thousands of dollars every year on Coast Guard-mandated, printed, triplicate forms that their mariners used each day. I re-designed these forms as fillable pdf files that, when complete, were automatically submitted to the proper authorities. Once the digital forms were implemented, the company saved over $30,000 each year on printing costs, while also decreasing mistakes in reporting that could lead to fines.

Before and after. Easier to understand and use, and includes version tracking.

Vessel Profiles

Every one of Martin Marine's tugs now has a vessel profile. These forms were kept up-to-date with every repair and upgrade so we would always have current specs on our tugs to share with potential clients and partners. These forms did not exist prior to my time at Martin, and if a customer wanted specs on one of our vessels, it took one of our engineers more than an hour to locate and share that information.

Newsletter & Graphic Design

I used the Adobe Suite to take their small newsletter to a celebrated, high-quality publication. The first step in this process was to retire the old logo and replace it with a fresh and modern one that adhered to the company style guide. From there, I created a new template in InDesign from scratch. I was responsible for most of the content, photography, and graphic design for this quarterly publication. I published eight issues while working at Martin. Both Shell Oil and Marathon Oil reached out to say how much they enjoyed our newsletter.
